🧠 High-Impact Vocabulary List

Word 1: Sustainability (Band 7.5)

  • Definition: The ability to maintain balance in the environment without depleting resources.
  • Synonym: Long-term environmental balance
  • Difference: Sustainability = overall balance; Conservation = protecting specific elements.
  • IELTS Sentence: Governments must adopt policies that promote sustainability rather than short-term economic growth.
  • Perception Shift: You’re not just talking about recycling — you’re addressing the survival of future generations.

Word 2: Pollution (Band 6.5–7)

  • Definition: The presence of harmful substances in the environment.
  • Synonym: Contamination
  • Difference: Pollution = general term; Contamination = more specific and often chemical.
  • IELTS Sentence: Urban areas face growing levels of air and water pollution due to industrial activities.

Word 3: Climate change (Band 7)

  • Definition: Long-term alteration of temperature and weather patterns.
  • Synonym: Global warming (not exactly the same)

Word 4: Carbon footprint (Band 7.5)

  • Definition: The amount of carbon dioxide emitted by a person or organisation.
  • Synonym: Emissions total
  • Difference: Carbon footprint = personal or organisational; Emissions = broader industrial term.
  • IELTS Sentence: Reducing one’s carbon footprint can be achieved by using public transport and cutting meat consumption.

Word 5: Renewable energy (Band 7)

  • Definition: Energy from sources that naturally replenish, like solar or wind.
  • Synonym: Green energy
  • Difference: Renewable = replaces itself; Green = non-polluting.
  • IELTS Sentence: Investing in renewable energy reduces dependence on fossil fuels and helps combat climate change.
