Global challenges

Global challenges such as climate change and pandemics highlight the imperative of international cooperation. These issues transcend national borders, making unilateral solutions largely ineffectual. A concerted, global effort is required to transcend political differences and foster a unified approach to our most pressing problems.

Step 1- Analysis of New Words

The 2 New Words :Imperative,Transcend

Imperative

  • Definition: Of vital importance; crucial.
  • Synonyms: vital, essential, crucial, necessary, urgent.
  • Comparison: While necessary is a general term, imperative is a stronger, more formal word that conveys a sense of extreme urgency and importance, often used in a moral or strategic context, such as a “moral imperative.”

Transcend

  • Definition: To be or go beyond the range or limits of (something).
  • Synonyms: surpass, exceed, go beyond, rise above.
  • Comparison: Surpass typically relates to achievement, as in “surpassing a previous record.” Transcend is a more abstract and philosophical term, often used to describe rising above limitations or conflicts, such as “transcending cultural barriers.”

Step 2- Analysis of Grammar point

Grammar point: Using Transition Words

An Example Questions from IELTS Reading:

IELTS Reading Questions Answer the following questions based on the article above.

  1. What two global challenges are mentioned as examples?
  2. Why are unilateral solutions described as ineffectual?

Grammar Point from the Article The grammar point is the use of Transition Words to connect ideas and create a cohesive flow.

Explain the Grammar Point and Give a Chance to Use It Transition words and phrases (e.g., however, therefore, in addition, for example) act as bridges between sentences and paragraphs. They signal the relationship between ideas, making your writing clearer and more coherent.

Your turn: Combine the following two sentences using a transition word:

  • Climate change is a complex problem.
  • It requires a variety of solutions.

Your answer: _________________

Step 3- New Words Application in Speaking and Writing

1.Speaking Mini Challenge

In your opinion, is international cooperation an imperative for solving global problems?

What political challenges must nations transcend to work together effectively?

Example of Band 6 and 7:

Band 6 Answer: “I think international cooperation is an imperative because big problems like pollution need everyone to help. Countries need to work together and transcend their own problems to solve things like climate change.”

Band 7 Answer: “It is my firm belief that international cooperation is an imperative for tackling the myriads of global challenges we face. Issues such as pandemics and economic crises do not respect borders, and therefore require a collective response. Nations must learn to transcend their individual political and economic agendas to find common ground and implement effective, unified strategies.”

2.Writing Mini Challenge

The most pressing global issues, such as environmental degradation and poverty, require nations to transcend their individual interests and cooperate. Discuss the importance of international cooperation in solving these issues.

Example of Band 6 and 7:

Band 6 Answer: “International cooperation is very important. To solve problems like climate change, countries have to transcend their own needs and work together. This is a big challenge but it is an imperative for the future. By sharing knowledge and money, we can find better solutions.”

Band 7 Answer: “The complex challenges of the 21st century, from environmental degradation to economic instability, highlight the imperative of international cooperation. To effectively address these issues, nations must transcend their self-serving political and economic interests and commit to collective action. A collaborative approach allows for the pooling of resources, knowledge, and expertise, leading to more comprehensive and sustainable solutions. For example, a unified international response to a pandemic, such as sharing research and vaccines, is far more effective than individual countries acting in isolation.”

Step 4- Identity Upgrade

Identity Upgrade.

Now you can use vocabulary and grammatical structures that demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the English language.

Learn to use ‘hedging’ for IELTS and university and how it’s used in business discussions. Hedging is the use of cautious language to express a degree of uncertainty, or to avoid making an overgeneralized or definitive statement. This is a vital skill in academic and professional English.

Examples:

  • Instead of: “Global agreements solve all problems.”
  • Use: “Global agreements can often be a crucial step in solving problems.”
  • Instead of: “Countries will always cooperate.”
  • Use: “Countries tend to cooperate more readily when faced with a common threat.”
